At least nine dead in Vancouver tragedy - car plows into crowd at street festival

At least nine people have been killed and several others injured in Vancouver after a vehicle plowed into a crowd at a Filipino street festival in the western Canadian city, police said.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene and investigations are ongoing, writes bbc.

"At this time, we are confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism," the local police statement on platform X said.

At a press conference held after midnight, the local police chief stated that the suspect is "known" to them, but did not provide further details.

"The victims are being transported to several hospitals, it would not be fair to the families to talk about the number of dead or injured," he said.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said: "I am devastated by the news of the horrific events at the Lapu-Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening."

The tragedy occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. local time near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where a Lapu-Lapu Day festival was being held in honor of the Philippine national hero. /Telegraph/
