How a Man United fan's viral hair challenge became a reflection of the Red Devils' instability for almost two years - now he has a question

Promises are hard to keep, but one Manchester United fan has been honouring his viral deal for over a year – and it looks like he's ready to see it through, for better or worse...
By now, you've probably heard about the unfortunate Manchester United fan who vowed not to cut his hair until the Red Devils won five games in a row.
He could hardly have imagined the impact this promise would have on football fan culture – or even on his personal life – with millions of followers on social media and the biggest names in the sport already knowing who he is.
Here's everything you need to know about The United Strand - one fan's viral "hairy" journey to fame in the world of football.

What is “The United Strand” hair challenge?
The United Strand is the name of an online phenomenon that was born after a public statement made by devoted Manchester United fan Frank Ilett.
Fed up with the constant instability of his beloved team, Ilett vowed in October 2024 that he would not cut his hair until Man United had won five games in a row. Neither he nor his followers thought that, 16 months later, the challenge would still be in place.
His hair, which grew into an ever-growing afro, became a running joke among fans, a “hair barometer” indicating Man United’s instability. The local and international media treated the phenomenon as a symbol of fan culture.
"It started out as just a joke. I thought it would be something fun, to bring a bit of humour to a very painful time for Manchester United fans," Ilett told Sky Sports.
However, not everyone took it in good sportsmanship. In September 2025, Ilett was physically attacked by another fan during United's 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.
"My aim was never to highlight Man United's flaws, but to spread positivity and humour," he insisted.

When did the hair challenge start?
The United Strand Challenge officially launched on October 5, 2024. Since that day, Ilett's hair has "survived" under the guidance of three different Manchester United coaches: Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim and now Michael Carrick.
By February 9, 2026, the challenge had lasted 492 days – that's one year, four months and seven days.
When will the challenge end?
The answer is simple in theory: when Manchester United win five games in a row.
After the victory over Tottenham on February 7, which was the fourth consecutive victory, there is a possibility that the challenge will end if Man United also wins against West Ham on February 10, 2026.
A "watchalong" video has even been confirmed, while Ilett expressed optimism.

"Carrick is at the helm, these hairs are going down very quickly. West Ham are next, four out of five done - for the first time since the start of the challenge. This time it's happening! Thanks Carrick!" he declared.
He even proposed four hairstyles during the day for fans to vote on. The majority of votes, or 67 percent, think he should go bald.

When was the last time Man United won five games in a row?
Despite the jeers from Aston Villa fans, who achieved 11 consecutive victories in the 2025/26 season, a five-game winning streak is not easy even for the best teams in the Premier League.
We have to go back to February 2024 for the last time Manchester United achieved five wins in a row.
The run began with a win over Newport County in the FA Cup and continued with wins over Wolves, West Ham, Aston Villa and Luton Town. /Telegrafi/
