Apple plans drastic changes for the iPhone's 20th anniversary

In 2027, the iPhone will mark its 20th anniversary, and Apple seems to have big plans.

The first iPhone was introduced on January 9, 2007, at the Macworld conference in San Francisco, and went on sale on June 29 of the same year in the United States.

In 2027, the iPhone will mark its 20th anniversary and Apple seems to have big plans, reports the Telegraph.

Some foreign media are pointing out that the 20th anniversary iPhone could bring the most radical redesign yet – a device whose front will be completely covered by the screen, with no visible cutouts for the camera, sensors, and the like.

This speculation coincides with a Bloomberg report, according to which Apple is allegedly developing a special Pro model with an emphasis on a glass design to celebrate two decades of the iPhone.

It may also be accompanied by the long-awaited foldable iPhone, but it is currently unclear whether it will be the first or second generation of such a device.

According to current information, the foldable iPhone could be introduced as early as 2026. Interestingly, Apple is still the only major smartphone manufacturer that does not have its own foldable model.

This big anniversary could also help revive interest in the iPhone, especially since sales have slowed in recent months.

An additional challenge presents a new 125% tariff on products from China, where most iPhone components are manufactured, introduced during the Donald Trump administration.

It's still unknown what Apple will call the anniversary model. According to the regular schedule, the iPhone 19 should appear in 2027.

But Apple has already changed names for important moments in the past, for example in 2017 it skipped the iPhone 9 and launched the iPhone X for its 10th anniversary.

Therefore, it is not excluded that for the 20th anniversary, it will introduce a model called iPhone XX, in accordance with Roman numerals.

Deepanjan Chatterjee, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester, warned that the long wait for a new iPhone design could be a "double-edged sword" for Apple.

"A bold redesign for the anniversary model sounds great, but it should be remembered that it is still two years away, and in the meantime Apple is trying to motivate users to buy new models and thus stop the decline in iPhone sales," he stressed.

Chatterjee stressed that Apple's new Intelligence feature has not yet significantly motivated owners of older iPhones to upgrade to newer models.

"High expectations for the 2027 model could further slow down the purchase of new devices, as many will prefer to wait," he stressed.

Chaterzy also warns of another problem: some users may buy the cheaper iPhone 16E now and wait a few years to then buy the more expensive model they really want. /Telegraph/
