"The Institute for Blood Transfusion Medicine has a kind of independence in terms of our functioning, but we are within the Ministry of Health, as it is a legal obligation for them to take care of health institutions. We are independent in terms of hospitals, but we cooperate with hospitals, as they have a need, especially when surgical interventions are performed," said Elezi.

Regarding their preparedness for emergency situations, Elezi said that the Institute has sufficient amounts of blood.

"We are prepared for any situation, as we have sufficient quantities of every type of blood and blood products. Erythrocytes are stored for up to 35 days, blood plasma is stored for 1 to 3 years, while platelets are stored for up to 5 days. We have sufficient quantities for patients who need them. For emergency situations, we have taken preliminary steps. On my initiative, we have prepared a procedure in case disasters or emergency situations occur, so that we are prepared for these situations. We have presented this draft document to the Ministry of Interior and the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, who should know how to act in such cases. The situation in Koçan was a serious situation, while our institution was ready to face this situation," said Elezi.

He also said that in Macedonia, citizens have a culture of blood donation, and this year the Institute's goal is to reach up to 60 thousand donors.

"I want to congratulate and thank the citizens who donate blood voluntarily. In the years that I manage, the number of donors increases year after year. This year we have set the number to reach 60 thousand blood donors. There is a culture of blood donation."

"First, they must be of legal age and then they must be healthy, have the desire and will to help patients. Then there is a questionnaire that donors must fill out and an examination is performed by the doctor where the patient's hemoglobin level is checked, as anemic people are not candidates to donate blood. If these procedures are in order, blood donation continues, which is a painless procedure," said Elezi, explaining the procedures for donating blood.
He also mentioned the benefits of blood donors.

"The advantages of blood donors are numerous, starting with the cardiovascular system, where research shows that 12% of blood donors are less at risk of cardiovascular diseases. It also affects the psychological aspect, knowing that sick patients are helped," said Elezi. /Telegrafi/
