Ambassador Aivo Orav: The EU wants a government in Kosovo that keeps its promises

The European Union Ambassador to Kosovo, Aivo Orav, has shared his thoughts on the recent visit of the EU Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Peter Sorensen, the process of forming a new government in Kosovo and the country's European perspective.

Orav expressed hope that the new government of Kosovo will be formed as soon as possible and will be a stable government ready for cooperation with international partners.

"The formation of the government will take more time here. We fully understand that. We very much hope that the new government will be a stable government that will be able to cooperate and implement. So there is a lot that the government can do to convince partners and to trust us that we need to move forward... A stable government means that if they promise something, then they deliver and also that they can promise," he stated on RTV 21.

Orav also commented on Sorensen's visit to Kosovo.

According to him, Peter Sorensen, who was appointed as EU Special Representative just a month ago, began his first visit to the region precisely in Kosovo.

"The purpose of his visit was more to listen and meet with all political actors, civil society and the business community to understand the situation and next steps," Orav stated.

He added that Sorensen did not come with any concrete offer or proposal, but intends to do the same in Belgrade to determine the further direction of the dialogue.

The EU Ambassador stressed that the EU’s enlargement policy is back on track and that Kosovo must be ready to meet the necessary criteria for membership. “92% of Kosovo citizens support EU membership and expect concrete steps from the government to move this process forward,” said Orav, emphasizing the importance of reforms in the rule of law, the economy and the environment.
