Trump calls Bezos, Amazon backs out of decision to disclose tariff costs

(Completed) – US President Donald Trump has called billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after reports emerged that the online retail giant planned to tell buyers how much the customs tariffs imposed by the US administration affected the price of products.

The report immediately sparked a fierce reaction from the White House, and according to reports, Trump personally called Bezos upon learning of the matter, and Amazon backed down from implementing the decision.

Two White House officials confirmed to CNN that Trump was angry about the possibility of tariff costs appearing alongside product prices, calling it a direct political attack on his trade policy. Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt strongly condemned Amazon's alleged plan.

Amazon will show the cost of tariffs in the price increase of the product, Trump reacts sharply

The administration of US President Donald Trump took a tough stance against Amazon, following reports that the company would begin displaying the cost of US President Donald Trump's tariffs on its products.

Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, called the move a "hostile and political act," writes sky news.

According to a report by Punchbowl News, Amazon plans to show how much of a product's price is made up of tariffs, by placing them next to the total price of the product. The move could help illustrate the impact of Trump's tariffs on the prices that American consumers pay.

This move could negatively impact the relationship between the Trump administration and Amazon, including founder Jeff Bezos, undermining any goodwill built so far.

Leavitt, during a press conference at the White House, said he had discussed the issue with President Trump earlier that day, calling Amazon's action an unacceptable and political stance.

She also highlighted a Reuters report from 2021 that cited an Amazon partnership with a "propaganda wing of China" and urged Americans to prefer American products.

"This is another reason why we need to support domestic supply chains and increase manufacturing in the United States," Leavitt said.

The market reaction was immediate, with Amazon shares falling more than 1 percent Tuesday morning after the comments. Leavitt, however, declined to comment on the impact the development might have on the relationship between Trump and Bezos, who has tried to maintain a warm relationship with the administration, praising the president for his election victory and dining at the White House.

In 2016, Amazon contributed $1 million to Trump's inaugural fund. The US leader has also praised Bezos, saying of him in an interview with The Atlantic: "He's been brilliant."

Despite this, Bezos' net worth has suffered a noticeable decline since the beginning of the year, due to the Trump administration's tariff policies. /Telegraph/
