Albania at risk of becoming a hub for trafficking in weapons of mass destruction

Albania risks becoming a production and transit country for weapons of mass destruction. Therefore, given this risk, the Ministry of Defense, in the National Strategy submitted for consultation, calls for strengthening border control and increasing cooperation with international partners to detect and combat this phenomenon.

More specifically, the strategy envisages increasing national security to prevent Albania from becoming a place of transit, production, purchase, or possession of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons, possessed by terrorist groups.

“Weapons of Mass Destruction in the possession of hostile states or terrorists represent one of the security challenges facing the region and the entire international community. Any action or inaction that leads to the proliferation or financing of WMD poses a threat to national security and its broader interests. Albania’s geostrategic situation, at the crossroads of connections with Europe as a whole and other continents, exposes our country to trafficking in WMD, raw materials for their production, as well as delivery systems.”

In its strategy, the Ministry of Defense states that the Republic of Albania does not possess Weapons of Mass Destruction, and will not develop or support any activity that leads to their proliferation or financing, but will contribute with all capacities to the prevention, interdiction and control of actions related to their proliferation.

The strategy also aims to increase resilience and strengthen capacities to respond to potential threats, with the aim of protecting the country and critical services against conventional threats./Tv Klan
