Kosovo citizen Avni Qenaj, a former member of the Kosovo Liberation Army, who was arrested on November 26, 2025 by Serbian authorities at the Merdar border crossing during transit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, was released from detention today.

The news was confirmed by his lawyer, Xhevdet Smakiqi, who stated that Qenaj is on his way to Kosovo, although he has not yet managed to meet his family.

"Avni Qenaj is traveling to Kosovo under the care of his family, without any support from the Government. He has not yet arrived in Kosovo and has not met with his family," Smakiqi said.

On December 4, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora announced that Serbian authorities had initiated criminal proceedings against Qenaj, charging him with war crimes in 1999 and sentencing him to 30 days in pre-trial detention.

Qenaj was arrested on November 26 by Serbian authorities, and his release comes after more than a month of detention in Serbia. Kosovo authorities have not yet given any new official reaction following his release.
