After the meeting in Riyadh, Rubio: The parties must make compromises to end the war in Ukraine

After the meeting held in Riyadh, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that all parties should be satisfied with the agreement that will be reached and that it should mark the end of the war.

"Everyone should be okay with the deal," Rubio said, highlighting the European Union's role in lifting sanctions on Russia.

"What's important to understand are two things. The first is that the only leader in the world who can do this, who can even bring people together to start a serious discussion on this issue, is President Donald Trump. The second thing I would say is that, in order to end this conflict, everyone involved has to be okay with the solution, it has to be acceptable to them," Rubio said, emphasizing that this was just the first step on a long and difficult path.

He added that, to end any conflict, there must be concessions from all sides, but it would be a mistake to determine them in advance.

Rubio signaled the role of the European Union, saying that there are other parties that have imposed sanctions.

"The European Union will have to be at the negotiating table at some point, because they have imposed sanctions as well. The goal is to end this conflict in a way that is just, sustainable and acceptable to all parties involved. What will that look like? That is the issue that the current engagement will focus on," Rubio said.

He added that part of the focus is ensuring that diplomatic missions can function and maintain strong diplomatic relations.

As a second element, he mentioned the development of peace negotiations for Ukraine, which will include “engagement and consultations” with Ukraine and “partners in Europe.”

Finally, he emphasized that in the third step, the US intends to engage in identifying the extraordinary opportunities that may exist if this conflict reaches an acceptable conclusion, to create partnerships with Russia on geopolitical issues, common interests, and economic cooperation.

"Obviously, the diplomatic part is where we hope to move forward quickly, as it involves our diplomatic relations. The second will be more difficult, as it has to do with Ukraine and ending this conflict, but I believe it is essential that the third becomes possible - that is, our ability to work together on other geopolitical issues of common interest, as well as on some economic partnerships that could be historic. However, the key that opens the doors to these opportunities is the end of this conflict," Rubio concluded. /Telegraph/
