This is the moment two climate activists spray red paint on a 133-year-old painting of Christopher Columbus in a Madrid museum.

The two female activists, from the Futuro Vegetal movement, were reportedly seen throwing biodegradable red paint over José Garnelo's work, "The First Homage to Christopher Columbus" at Madrid's maritime museum on Sunday.

A small crowd gathered shouted at them as they threw paint over the artwork, which depicts Columbus' landing in the New World in 1492.

As they threw the paint, a guard ran in and slipped while trying to stop them. The two activists were then caught by other guards and unceremoniously escorted out of the museum, the Telegraph reports.

The pair were reportedly arrested for crimes against heritage. Futuro Vegetal claimed today that police were "punishing" the two activists with hunger strike for not providing vegan food.

The museum said its employees were forced to undertake an immediate restoration of the painting.

Visitors were asked to leave the museum to allow staff to restore the painting, which was done within just a few hours. /Telegraph/
