A 6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Turkey, epicenter near Istanbul

A devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Istanbul, the EMSC seismological center has announced.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Sea of Marmara, on the outskirts of Istanbul, while tremors were also felt in other provinces, the Telegraph reports.

Panicked residents came out of their homes and apartments, as did many others who were at work at the time.

Most of the residents affected by the earthquake are still staying in open spaces for fear that another earthquake may occur.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on social media that competent agencies have gone to the field to assess the damage.

"I wish our citizens affected by the earthquake a speedy recovery," Yerlikaya added. /Telegraph/
