A 552-carat yellow diamond has been discovered. It is considered the largest diamond ever found in North America.

Mining company Dominion Diamond Mines said in a press release Thursday that the diamond was discovered in October at the Diavik Diamond Mine in the American Northwest Territories.

"The stunning gemstone measures 33.74 millimeters by 54.56 millimeters," the company said.

Dominion Diamond Mines added that it is too early to determine its value. While a specialist will be selected to cut and polish the stone.

According to the company, this discovery surpasses a previous record held by the Diavik Foxfire, a 187.7-carat diamond discovered in the same mine in 2015 by mining company Rio Tinto. /oranews/
