On Sunday at midnight, the two-week deadline for political entities to submit the list of names of candidates for deputies to the CEC, with whom they will compete in the extraordinary elections for the Assembly of Kosovo, will end.
So far, the CEC has certified 23 political entities, of which 17 are political parties; 3 coalitions; 2 civic initiatives and 1 independent candidate. The Serbian List party remained out of certification by the CEC, which has appealed to the Electoral Panel for Complaints and Appeals.
CEC spokesperson, Valmir Elezi, told KosovaPress that after the submission of candidacies for deputies, this institution will take the next steps to verify the eligibility of the candidates if they meet the legal criteria.
"Until December 7, 2025, political entities that have applied for certification of participation in the elections must submit through the platform their list of names of candidates for deputies of the early elections for the Assembly of Kosovo. In fulfillment of legal obligations regarding the suitability/ability of candidates to be certified, the CEC, through the Office, will submit to several institutions the special requests together with the list of candidates who want to be certified for participation in the elections, in order to verify whether they are in compliance with Article 30 of the Law on General Elections," said Elezi.
According to Article 30 of the Law on General Elections, a person cannot be certified as a candidate for deputy if they fall into categories prohibited by law, including holding special public functions, diplomatic positions, membership in electoral bodies, or failure to comply with the decisions of the ECAP and the CEC.
The most important restriction is the one that prohibits the candidacy of any person who, in the last three years, has a final court conviction for a criminal offense with at least one year of effective imprisonment.
